So my latest batch of DVDs from Netflix has come and gone. I don’t think they were good enough to warrant full reviews but here’s a little something something.
White Oleander: Not as bad as I thought it would be and unfortunately it reminded me of my own sick, twisted mother.
Roger Dodger: I had read about this one and really wanted to see it. It wasn’t as depraved as I hoped it to be but I enjoyed it nonetheless. One of the more quotable movies in recent memories. I was trying to find some online since my memory is poor; when I find some, I’ll post ‘em.
Breathless (1960): This is yet another pick from the Best Movie Moments article in last month’s Premiere (which I will forever more refer to as Crap-miere). Good lord this movie stunk. I do like older films. I like black and white movies. And I truly do appreciate cinema from abroad. But this thing was old, black and white and in French; apparently I can’t handle all three at once. I found the lead actor so unappealing; what was the deal with him rubbing his lips all the time? All the acting sucked and the music was too peppy during the final death scene. I’m sure in 1960 this was a work of art but film has come a long way, baby. 20 years later, this was remade in the US with the French and American roles switched but the title and plot intact. It starred a hot young buck named Richard Gere and let me tell you ladies, if you’ve never seen a shirtless Gere in his prime laying on a diving board going in for the kiss, then get thee to a video store now. This movie sucked too but at least you turn down the sound and look at the pretty pictures.
